Before you begin
Have a Tessly account and a separate practice model ready. Sign in yourself using the Open Tessly link. Prepare your currency, forecast start date, revenue, costs, team and cash. This walkthrough uses the SaaS B2B template and an already-revenue-generating business; other business models show different fields.
Try it with Northstar Notes
Northstar Notes is a fictional B2B subscription business. Every number below is a teaching assumption, not a benchmark or a recommendation. Use a separate practice model; replace these values before making business decisions.
- Operating currency
- USD
- Current monthly subscription revenue
- 10,000
- Current paid company customers
- 100
- Monthly new paid company customers
- 10
- Monthly paid-company retention
- 98%
- Monthly non-headcount OpEx, excluding marketing
- 2,000
- Monthly non-headcount marketing
- 500
- Team / monthly base salary per person
- 2 people / 3,000
- Current cash
- 100,000
Check the units: 10,000 ÷ 100 = USD 100 per customer per month. Non-headcount spend is (2,000 + 500) × 12 = USD 30,000 per year, excluding payroll. Base salaries total USD 6,000 per month before employer costs. Retention of 98% means 2% churn for the same monthly cohort; do not enter 2 in a retention field. These checks do not predict the final forecast, which also depends on timing, costs and other assumptions.
Follow the steps
- 01
Collect the source information
Use the Northstar Notes example below, or gather your business notes, pricing, customer counts, monthly costs and cash balance. Share only the information you intend to give your chosen AI provider. Mark estimates and missing values clearly.
- 02
Give the agent the actual field names
Open the model and list the field labels you need to fill. For this example, use the subscription revenue and paid-company customer fields in the manual tutorial. Include each field’s currency, unit and period so the agent does not confuse annual revenue with monthly revenue.
- 03
Request an input checklist
Use the prompt below. Ask for one row per input, with its value, unit, period, source and status: supplied, derived, estimated or missing. The agent should ask about gaps instead of turning guesses into facts.
- 04
Review, then paste one value at a time
Check every row against your source. Copy only the value into the corresponding Tessly field; use plain numbers such as 10000 rather than a sentence or an entire table. This is field-by-field copy and paste, not a bulk import. Follow the manual tutorial for the remaining steps.
- 05
Check the model and keep the assumptions
Compare the completed inputs with your checklist, including any defaults that remain. Generate the forecast after reviewing required inputs. Keep the source checklist with your working notes so you can explain what changed later.
Prompt to copy
Select the prompt text and copy it. Replace the bracketed placeholders before using it.
Check your result
- The intended model and operating currency match your checklist.
- Subscription baseline shows 100 customers and USD 10,000 monthly revenue; derived average is USD 100.
- New customers and retention are monthly inputs; retention is 98, not 0.98 or 2, in the percent field.
- Non-headcount costs and marketing are separate; salaries are not counted twice.
- Starting cash is USD 100,000; future funding, delivery costs, employer costs and dates have been reviewed.
- The model has no unexplained missing inputs. Review results and remaining defaults before saving or sharing.
If you get stuck
The field is missing
Check the business template, revenue status and step you selected. This example uses SaaS B2B with existing subscription revenue. Do not force a value into a different field just to continue.
The number changes after entry
Check units and formatting. Paste plain digits, leave the field and read its displayed value again. For a field labelled %, use 98 for 98%.
The next action is unavailable
Read the required-field message on that step. Complete the missing inputs; do not fill them with invented numbers. In Growth, check that the customer additions and retention have been applied.
The AI cannot complete a step
Keep its reviewed checklist and finish that step manually. Browser access depends on the agent. If it suggests an endpoint or bulk-paste format without Tessly documentation, stop and use the documented field-by-field workflow.
